David Aaron Dunn was born in San Diego, CA in 1966. In 1984 he won a scholarship to the Parson's School of Design in Los Angeles. He studied painting and printmaking at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1985 and decided to pursue a longtime dream to study art in Italy. He was awarded a Borsa di Studia to attend the school Il Bisonte in Florence between 1986-1987. He was influenced by the fresco tradition in Italy and completed a series of large scale figurative paintings culminating in his Last Supper (eight by sixteen feet) in Santa Cruz in 1989. His largest printmaking project was a cycle of etchings based on motion at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
In 1991 he was back in San Diego working as a set painter in an amusement park and continuing the theme of motion in a group of small figurative paintings and drawings. He moved to New York in 1992 to earn his MFA at Queens College. Between 1992-1994 he completed a series of large paintings and drawings based on synthetic space with imagined architecture and figures. This developed into his current work of landscapes painted from observation. After completing his MFA, David moved to San Francisco. When he isnt doing his own painting, he is a scenic artist for the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet. Davids studio is in Hunters Point.
